This photograph of 66 Chapel Street was taken around 1890 and at the time it was owned by Mr. James T. S. Mabbott, Ladies and Gentlemen's Tailor. Previously a cutter with a well known London house and with a leading firm of tailors and breeches makers at Sevenoaks, Mr. Mabbott was a partner in one of the principal tailoring businesses in Penzance before starting his own business in Chapel Street. He was particularly regarded for his walking and cycling breeches and was the C.T.C. official tailor. The front of the building has changed only a little to the present day, the wrought ironwork on the window ledge was removed for the war effort and the grills to the cellar lights have been blocked up. The single door has been replaced by a double door although the original granite step still remains inside. |
